Official game character acrylic stands and badges in branded packaging on a desk

A reader in Manchester sent me photos of a Hu Tao acrylic stand she had bought from a marketplace listing that described it as "official miHoYo." The colours were slightly washed out, the edges were cloudy, and the back had no printing at all. She had paid £23 for it including shipping. The official version, bought directly from China through a shopping agent, would have cost her a little less than that, arrived in about the same time, and come with the packaging fans actually care about.

That gap is the whole problem with Genshin Impact merchandise outside China. The game is published worldwide by HoYoverse, but a large share of its physical merchandise appears first, and sometimes only, through miHoYo's official channels on Chinese platforms. International fans who want it either navigate those channels or buy from resellers whose stock is a mix of genuine items, grey imports and outright fakes. I spent three years sourcing licensed goods from manufacturers in Guangdong and Zhejiang, and this is the process I now recommend to friends.

Where official stock actually comes from

Genshin merchandise reaches buyers through three main routes, and knowing which one an item came from tells you most of what you need about its authenticity.

miHoYo's own flagship stores on Chinese marketplaces. These carry the widest range of first-party goods: acrylic stands, badges, plush, character-themed stationery and seasonal sets tied to in-game events. A flagship store on Tmall is run by a registered business and carries the "旗舰店" (flagship store) label next to the brand name. That label is not a guarantee of everything, but it rules out the small anonymous sellers who produce most fakes.

Licensed manufacturers. Scale figures and higher-end collectibles are often made by licensed partners, for example APEX-TOYS for many of the Genshin scale figures. These usually sell through their own official stores and through authorised retailers, and their packaging carries both the manufacturer's branding and the licensing marks.

International official stores and authorised retailers. HoYoverse has run official online shops for overseas buyers and partners with retailers in some regions. Range is narrower and some items arrive months later, but there is no agent step involved.

Anything outside those three routes is a reseller. Some resellers are honest people who bought during a pre-sale and are passing items on at a markup. Others are not.

How the pre-sale system changes the timeline

The thing that catches international buyers most often is the pre-sale, shown on Chinese listings as "预售". Popular official merchandise is frequently sold before it is produced, with a shipping window printed on the listing: sometimes 15 days, often 30 to 60, occasionally longer for figures.

If you buy through an agent, that window comes before any international shipping even starts. A badge set listed with a 45 day pre-sale might take two months or more to reach you in the UK or US. That is normal and not a sign of a scam. The opposite is worth a second look: a reseller offering an item for immediate delivery when the official store is still showing it as pre-sale. Either they bought early from the official store, which you can sometimes verify by asking for an order screenshot, or the item is not official.

A worked example of the real cost

People often assume that buying direct from China through an agent is expensive. Here is the breakdown from a small order I placed for a friend earlier this year, rounded to the nearest pound.

Item or chargeCost
Two official acrylic stands from the flagship store (¥69 each)£15
One official badge set (¥45)£5
Domestic shipping to the agent's warehouse£1
Agent service fee (about 5 percent of goods)£1
International shipping, roughly 420 g packed, economy air line£11
Total£33

Marketplace listings outside China for the same three items, labelled "official," added up to about £58 when I checked the same week, and I could not verify any of them. Shipping costs per item drop sharply if you combine orders, which is why many fans buy through group orders. Our guide to group buy etiquette covers how to do that without falling out with anyone. For the shipping side in more depth, see understanding shipping when buying from China.

Customs charges depend on where you live and the declared value, so I have left them out. For small parcels into the UK, VAT is generally collected at the point of sale or on arrival, and some agents add it for you. Check your own country's rules before a large order.

The advice I would ignore: "check the reviews"

The usual tip for avoiding fakes is to read the reviews. On Chinese platforms this helps a little, and on international marketplaces it helps less than people think. Review sections for popular Genshin items are often a mix of genuine buyers who cannot tell the difference, buyers reviewing the shipping speed rather than the item, and reviews carried over from an unrelated product the listing used to sell.

I trust physical checks much more. On genuine acrylic stands, the print is crisp at the edges, the backing is printed or protected with film, and the base slots fit tightly. Official packaging carries the miHoYo or Genshin Impact logo, a product name in Chinese, and usually a barcode and an anti-counterfeit sticker or code. Fakes often skip the packaging altogether or use a generic clear bag. Our broader guide on spotting counterfeit merchandise before you buy has photos of other common tells.

I should be honest about the limit here. Some high quality fakes now copy packaging well enough that I cannot always tell from photos alone. When an item matters to you, the only reliable answer is buying from one of the three routes above.

One thing to do this week

Pick one Genshin item you want. Find it on the official flagship store first, note the official price in yuan and whether it is on pre-sale, then compare that against the listing you were about to buy from. If the reseller's price is lower than the official one, or the item ships faster than the official pre-sale allows, walk away. More of our game merchandise guides live in the games section.
