How to Judge Fan Apparel Quality Before You Order

Two hoodies with the same anime print, same colour, same listing photo. One costs 28 dollars, the other 65. Six washes later the cheap one has a cracked print, a collar that curls and sleeves two centimetres shorter than when it arrived.

Two hoodies with the same anime print, same colour, same listing photo. One costs 28 dollars, the other 65. Six washes later the cheap one has a cracked print, a collar that curls and sleeves two centimetres shorter than when it arrived. The expensive one looks almost new. Nothing in the main product photo would have told you which was which, but the reviews and the small print almost always do.

I have bought a lot of fan apparel from official stores, convention booths and overseas print shops, and I have learned to judge fan apparel quality before I order by reading listings and reviews in a particular way. Here is what I check, in the order I check it, with the numbers that actually separate a shirt you will wear for years from one you will regret.

Fabric Weight Is the Number That Matters Most

Look for GSM, grams per square metre, in the listing or the size chart. It is the closest thing apparel has to a quality score, and good sellers publish it. If a store will not tell you, ask. If they still will not, that is your first answer.

GarmentLightMidweightHeavyweight
T-shirtUnder 150 GSM150 to 200 GSMOver 200 GSM
Hoodie or sweatshirtUnder 280 GSM280 to 350 GSMOver 350 GSM

Light is not automatically bad. A 145 GSM tee is fine for summer conventions. But a hoodie under 280 GSM tends to pill quickly and lose its shape at the cuffs, and many cheap fan hoodies sit right at 240.

Also check the fibre. Combed or ring spun cotton feels smoother and lasts longer than standard open end cotton. A cotton and polyester blend, often 80/20 or 60/40, shrinks less and holds colour better, which is no bad thing for a dark hoodie.

Know Which Print Method You Are Buying

The print is why you are buying fan apparel in the first place, so it is worth knowing what each method does over time.

  • Screen printing: ink pushed through a mesh stencil. Vivid, durable and the standard for official merchandise runs and band shirts. Hard to beat for bold designs with a few colours.
  • DTG (direct to garment): an inkjet printer applies ink straight into the fabric. Common with print on demand shops. Soft to the touch and good for detailed art, but colours on dark fabric can fade noticeably within 20 to 30 washes.
  • DTF (direct to film): the design is printed on film, then heat pressed on. Bright and sharp, but it sits on top of the fabric and can feel slightly plasticky. Cheap DTF is the usual source of cracking.
  • Sublimation: dye bonded into polyester. Perfect for all over prints and sports style jerseys, but it only works on polyester or high polyester blends.
  • Embroidery: thread stitched into the fabric. Almost indestructible, usually used for small logos.

If a listing just says "high quality printing," look at the review photos. A shiny, raised edge around the design usually means a transfer. Fabric texture showing through the ink usually means DTG or screen print.

Using Reviews to Judge Fan Apparel Quality

General store reviews tell you about shipping speed and customer service. For clothing you need different details. When I scan reviews, I look for these and skip almost everything else:

  1. Photos after washing. One review showing the print after three months is worth fifty five star ratings posted the day the parcel arrived.
  2. Height and weight with the size ordered. "I am 178 cm, 75 kg, ordered L, fits loose" is gold.
  3. Comments on the collar and cuffs. These fail first on cheap garments.
  4. Colour match. Dark reds and purples photograph very differently from how they look in person.

Video reviews help a lot with drape and thickness, because you can see how the fabric hangs. Our earlier piece on why unboxing videos became the most trusted review format explains what to watch for beyond the first excited minute.

Ignore the Size Label and Use the Chart

This is where I push back on the common advice to "size up if in doubt." Sizing up on a boxy Asian cut hoodie can leave you swimming in it, while sizing up on a slim Western cut tee might be exactly right. The label tells you almost nothing across brands.

Instead, lay a garment you already love flat on a table. Measure across the chest from one armpit seam to the other, then from the top of the shoulder seam to the hem. Compare those two numbers to the seller's chart. Allow for shrinkage too: pure cotton typically shrinks 3 to 5 percent on its first hot wash, which on a 70 cm long tee is two to three centimetres.

Warning Signs in a Listing

A few patterns show up again and again on apparel that disappoints:

  • Only mockup images, with the design pasted flat onto a digital shirt and no real photos.
  • No fabric weight or fibre content anywhere on the page.
  • Reviews that all mention the character but never the garment.
  • One size chart reused across tees, hoodies and jackets.
  • A price far below what the official store charges for the same licensed design.

That last one usually means unlicensed reprinting, which often uses lower resolution art. Zoom into the review photos. Blurry linework and jagged edges around text are a giveaway.

When Paying More Is Worth It

Not every fan shirt needs to be heavyweight screen printed cotton. If you want a tee for a single event, a 25 dollar DTG shirt does the job. But for a hoodie you will wear every winter, the jump from 30 to 60 dollars usually buys you heavier fabric, a ribbed cuff that holds its shape and a print method that survives. Spread over three years of wear, the dearer one is often the cheaper buy.

Once you have worn something for a while, write it up for other fans. Our guide on how to write a merchandise review fans trust covers exactly what to include, and you can browse more in our reviews section.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I wash fan apparel to protect the print?

Turn it inside out, wash cold, and skip the tumble dryer. Heat is the main enemy of DTG and DTF prints. Hang drying alone can double the life of a printed design.

Is official merchandise always better quality?

Not always. Official stores often use good screen printing but sometimes choose light blanks to keep prices down. Check the GSM on official listings too.

What does "oversized fit" actually mean?

It means the garment is cut wider and often with dropped shoulders. Check the chest measurement on the chart rather than trusting the label, because one brand's oversized is another's regular.

Before Your Next Order

Measure one favourite hoodie and one favourite tee tonight and save the numbers in your phone. Next time you see a design you love, check three things in under two minutes: the GSM, the print method and one review photo taken after washing. If any of the three is missing, keep looking. There is almost always a better made version of the same design out there.
